The History of
'Docs Who Rock'
Since the first Docs Who Rock in 2004, the show has grown
into a widely-recognized, highly successful event for United
Way of Summit County (UWSC). Originally conceived by UWSC
Vice President Michael Gaffney as a way to encourage more
interaction between the medical community and United Way,
the show enables local physicians to show off their musical
talents, either as solo acts or as part of a group. Each act
includes at least one physician (M.D. or D.O.) who lives or practices medicine in
Summit County.
Dr. Terry Gordon, retired
cardiologist and nationally recognized AED activist, was
asked to help by showcasing music. "Patients and the
community get a chance to see their physician in a different
light, a more human light," says Gordon. Through the years,
Dr. Gordon’s celebrity performances have been a highlight of
the show. He has owned the stage as Rod Stewart, Austin
Powers, Mick Jagger, Tina Turner (you had to see it to
believe it!), Michael Jackson and Barry Manilow.
The Docs Who
Rock show quickly outgrew its first two venues -- the Main
Library’s 430-seat auditorium in 2004 and the 800+ seat
theatre at North High School in 2005. Since 2006, The
University of Akron has hosted the event at the beautiful
E.J. Thomas Hall, and attendance has fluctuated between
1,100 and 1,800 enthusiastic fans.
United Way of Summit
County President Bob Kulinski said, "The growth of Docs Who
Rock has been extraordinary. We’ve trademarked the
name and we’ve already licensed several other United Ways to
produce similar shows in their communities. Our
collaboration with Dr. Terry Gordon and the partnership with
Dr. Luis Proenza, Dave Osterland and the University of Akron
have produced a signature event for United Way of Summit
County."
